Walberswick has it all, as so many people who return time after time will verify.
Whether you enjoy brisk country walks, relaxing in the excellent village pubs, spending time on the beach or village green with the children, searching the reedbeds for the elusive bittern, browsing the varied stylish shops of Walberswick and Southwold, cycling for miles down quiet country lanes, or whiling away the time in teashops, it's all on your doorstep from The Penthouse at Marsh End.
Recreation
With the gentle hills, quiet lanes and stunning landscapes, the Walberswick
area is ideal for cycling. You can store your bikes in the garden shed at
The Penthouse, or you can easily hire bikes for
a day or week. For the children and young-at-heart crabbing is a great way
to while away the hours. The World
Crabbing Championships are held at Walberswick
every August, so you could get in practice on the creek, just a stone's throw
from The Penthouse. Boat trips down the river or out to sea are available
from the other side of the river, and there are endless footpaths and the
beach to explore around the village.
Wildlife
With a National Nature Reserve at your feet, Walberswick is a fantastic area
for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts. Bitterns, Marsh Harriers, and
Bearded Tits are just three of the wonderful birds that can be seen and heard
in the reedbeds, whilst on the heathland you may be lucky to spot a Dartford
Warbler or see the rare Silver-studded blue butterflies. For a river walk
look out for seals and waders as well as the tern colonies in summer. With
woodlands, grazing meadows and brackish pools there is no end of variety
in what you might find during summer and winter. And if that's not enough
you have Minsmere RSPB reserve just a few miles down the coast, as well
as several other nature reserves in the area.
Shopping
Arguably one of the best village stores around, you can buy your papers
and groceries without having to get into your car. Choose souvenirs, clothes
and gifts at the shops on the Green, and buy fish fresh from the boats
at the harbour. Often home-produce is available from stalls outside cottages
in the village. The market town of Southwold is also within easy walking
or cycling distance, offering shops, banks, a quirky pier, tourist information,
restaurants and, being home to the famous Adnams brewery, there's a great
choice of pubs in and around the town.
Eating Out
Walberswick has two excellent pubs, The Bell and The Anchor, both serving
a variety of bar snacks and restaurant meals, and both with beer gardens
for those warm summer days and log fires for cosy winter evenings. There
are also a couple of tearooms in the village for those who dare to indulge
in such tasty temptations.
